Director CMRE
Based in La Spezia, Italy, CMRE is NATO’s world-leading research laboratory, drawing on over 65 years of expertise in undersea science and technology.
Founded during the Cold War to track Soviet submarines, we now apply that legacy to today’s most urgent maritime threats – from protecting undersea infrastructure and countering sea mines to addressing the resurgence of submarine activity.
Our scientists and engineers are developing advanced technologies powered by artificial intelligence, robotics, and next-generation underwater acoustics. CMRE also operates NATO’s first quantum computing laboratory, and its only research vessels – floating laboratories that conduct real-world experiments from the Mediterranean to the Arctic.
Join us as we push the boundaries of maritime science, deepen knowledge from seabed to space, and help secure the future of the Alliance at sea.
Documentary makers from KRAKEN FILMS spent a month at sea with CMRE scientists and the Italian Navy crew, capturing life and research in the Baltic and the Arctic for a 30-minute programme. ‘Le Chant des Abysses’ (Echoes from the Abyss) aired on France 2 at 13:15, Saturday, 27 September, 2025. Step aboard with us to witness how science, innovation, and collective defence come together – and feel the emotions that drive our team every single day. Watch how we, the NATO Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation (CMRE), advance NATO’s mission above and below the surface.
