Date added: 07/07/2012
Date modified: 07/07/2012
Filesize: 93.69 kB

The quietest ship in its class, the NATO Research Vessel (NRV) Alliance was designed to minimize noise radiating from the ship into the water, making it an excellent platform for sonar testing and other types of research where a quiet undersea environment is essential. The 93-metre, 3,180-ton, openocean research vessel offers 400 square metres of laboratory space and state-of-the-art navigation, computer, and communication equipment.

Coastal Research Vessel Leonardo Coastal Research Vessel Leonardo

Date added: 07/07/2012
Date modified: 07/07/2012
Filesize: 82.21 kB

Launched in 2002, Coastal Research Vessel (CRV) Leonardo is a valuable asset to CMRE's programme of work, contributing significantly to the scientific successes of the Centre. The vessel provides excellent access to the sea for small research experiments, engineering trials and military experimentation, and it has an increasing role in conducting research experiments related to port protection or involving AUVs.

Environmental Knowledge and Operational Effectiveness Environmental Knowledge and Operational Effectiveness

When making decisions during operations, naval commanders, planners and operators rely on meteorological and oceanographic data and forecasts. However, in the coastal zone, where NATO navies typically operate, the environment can change dramatically over short distances and lengths of time. In addition, resources to gather meteorological and oceanographic data are typically limited as is our understanding of complex ocean processes. These limitations create uncertainties. Researchers at the Centre are trying to quantify these uncertainties.
