The text should provide some help for those who want to work with the NURC SAS processing chain. The description of a software tool capable of simulating, in the time domain, the acoustic time series resulting from scattering from various seafloor types and acoustic source/receiver geometries is presented in the form of a user manual. This package, named BORIS-SSA, is an upgrade, with various new features, of BORIS-3D. The parameters of the model characterize the sonar directivity and pulse shape, the geometrical configuration of the scattering problem and the geo-physical characteristics of the seafloor (but also sea surface or other surface). This surface can be generated to have various statistical behaviours or can be obtained from deterministic data based on the surface heights (profilometry, stereo-photogrammetry, bathymetry, etc). The package is platform independent and user friendly. This report is intended as a detailed description of the implementation on a source code level. A short introduction to the model underlying the package and a comprehensive demonstration program are also given.

OpenSea is a modelling and simulation platform for hybrid tactical gaming. It is a tool for the preliminary exercise of new technology concepts by immersion into virtual operation for early de-risking of new technologies. OpenSea features now in the NURC programmne of work as a tool for use by other projects rather than as a project in its own right. The purpose of this report is to review the origin of OpenSea and its roles, applications, configuration, linkages in NATO programmes, and ongoing requirements extending into the first half of 2012. The report therefore provides programmatic context for OpenSea into 2012.

Autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) are expected to play an important role in future mine hunting operations. They have been shown to have many advantages over conventional systems such as the variable depth capability, human safety and cost reduction. AUVs are able to conduct missions of many square kilometres and many hours, collecting high resolution synthetic aperture sonar (SAS) data and corresponding mine classification results. Since AUVs are relatively small and low power, they may have some vulnerability to obstacles that are difficult to detect, especially nets. For this reason a preliminary investigation on employability of the SAS for detecting fishing nets is conducted based on sea tests. During the CATHARSIS 2 sea trial, several nets were deployed in different areas in which NURC's MUSCLE AUV conducted surveys. The preliminary results show that nets can be detected in principle, but that these detections are not consistent. For better insight into the potential of detecting netswith a SAS, a more controlled experimental set-up would be necessary. That having said, due to the inconsistencies encountered, the approach is not expected to be a robust solution to the net problem.
