Call for Abstracts (CFA) and Abstract Submission

The 5WMAUGT CFA can be downloaded here
Abstract submission is open. Submission deadline: 14 October2018.
To submit your abstract, please go to the Abstract Submission & Registration section.

Overview

Underwater gliders have been recognized to have great potentials for assisting underwater counter A2/AD (anti-access/area denial) activities, persistent environmental survey under ice, as well as Maritime Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (MISR) missions. This is due to their cost-effective, heterogeneity in payloads, low power consumption hence long endurance (up to several months), and stealth properties (low detectability). It is also well perceived that ISR should be based on coordinated networking configurations so that the data from different assets can be fused to obtain sensitive information.

Following four successful workshops in 2013, 2014, 2016 and 2017, the 5th Workshop on Military Applications of Underwater Glider Technology (WMAUGT) will be hosted again at the NATO - STO CMRE (La Spezia, Italy) on Tuesday 13 – Thursday 15 November 2018. The first half of the Workshop is dedicated to presentations and discussions among participants. The second half is dedicated to summarize the outcomes of the workshop and to discuss prospective collaborations among participants.

Objectives and Topics

The main objective of 5WMAUGT is to provide an opportunity for the personnel from scientific, academic, industrial and military communities to present and discuss the state-of-art developments in underwater glider technology, as well as the relevant military and civilian applications it offers and could offer in the future. Topics (not limited to) to be explored among the participants are provided here .

Outcomes (Expected)

Based on the contributions from participants from scientific, industrial, academic and military communities. The 5WMAUGT expects to get a summary of current and future applications of underwater gliders in the EKOE (Environmental Knowledge and Operational Effectiveness) and MISR domains, as well as in other applications or domains (based on NATO priorities). It is also expected to get a summary of where this technology is being directed in the future, including new developments (e.g. very deep water exploration, under ice exploration). Definition of military requirements for underwater glider technology is also expected from military personnel participants.

Additional information

Participants from the military, government, research, academia and industry communities are welcome to the 5WMAUGT, and may either:

- Attend and contribute: by submitting a short abstract (no more than 200 words), giving a short presentation (10 minutes) about one of the stated objectives/topics of the conference, and providing a summary of intent for participation (background and expected outcome).

- Only attend: by providing a summary of intent for participation (background and expected outcome).

Abstracts will appear on-line on the 5WMAUGT web site as a part of the 5WMAUGT Proceedings (unless otherwise specified).

Attendance is limited to the nationals of the 28 member countries of NATO, as well as Australia, Austria, Finland, New Zealand, Sweden and Switzerland. The meeting will be held at NATO UNCLASSIFIED security level.

The number of participants is limited. Participation will be confirmed once an abstract and/or a summary of intent has been submitted and accepted. Please click here for further details about Abstract Submission and Registration.
