Multiple NATO nations are now committed to the future study of the employment of unmanned maritime platforms for ASW missions. The technology level of these platforms has risen to a point whereby they can have sufficient endurance and sensing capacity to perform particular ASW missions. The potential benefit is seen as a reduction in cost when compared to expensive manned equivalents and the ability to operate in an area covertly and potentially for long periods of time. This study attempts to quantify the cost vs benefit trade off of various categories of unmanned platforms to conduct an area search or a barrier mission. The results allow for comparison with manned equivalents and may be used to derive technology requirements in future studies.
