This study seeks to further explore the concept of AUVs deploying towed arrays for passive detections of submarine targets. The concept is explored within the framework of the search equation combined with cost parameters. The cost parameters are determined as a function of both array length and required speed and serve to limit the solutions to sensible values. Indeed the solutions obtained seek to minimize the total cost of the system while being able to meet the requirement to obtain a given cumulative probability of detection within a time constraint.
