Glider path planning tool, an upgrade using ocean-acoustic predictions and risk analysis solutions. Oddone, Manlio; Pennucci, Giuliana; Cecchi, Daniele; Garau, Bartolome. CMRE-MR-2018-008. January 2019.
Battlespace Awareness (BA) is part of the strategies developed to monitor the marine environment systematically and continuously, to task the sensors and to integrate and exploit the information collected. Recent technological developments in robotics allow the use of fleets of Unmanned Underwater Vehicles (UUVs) to support Maritime Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (MISR) operations in any geographic area. In this context, the NATO Science and Technology Organization - Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation (STO-CMRE) is performing a significant effort to support NATO nations during the mission planning process developing oceanographic Tactical Decision Aids (TDA) tools for UUVs (AMETOCP-2.1, NATO catalogue of meteorological and oceanographic TDA, 2016). This study documents STO-CMRE achievements and emerging new solutions for the coming year, focusing on tools for glider operations. The attention is focused on a MATLAB® tool, initially developed by Maarten (2010), and recently upgraded and validated using glider and environmental data available from a recent STO-CMRE sea trial: the Long-Term Glider Missions for Environmental Characterization 2017 (LOGMEC17). Simulation results show satisfactory performance which indicates that the proposed upgrade can be used to determine hydrodynamic added mass coefficients and represents a valuable asset to support our expanding development efforts for path planning and risk analysis.
