On 8–10 October 2019, CMRE hosted the Maritime Situational Awareness Workshop (MSAW) 2019 at the Villa Marigola, Lerici. The workshop hosted by the Centre showcased over 170 researchers, scientists and engineers from 23 countries across the globe.
Participants came together to discuss advanced technologies, innovative concepts and emerging scientific challenges in the Maritime Situational Awareness (MSA) operational needs domain. This highly successful workshop included 42 oral presentations, 12 posters and 10 in-booth technical demonstrations from the maritime domain in the fields of Big Data, Signal Processing, Data Fusion, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning and Maritime Unmanned Systems.
MSAW 2019 kicked off with a welcome and opening session chaired by Dr Catherine Warner, Director of Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation (CMRE). Keynote presentations were given by Dr Alfonso Farina, Sergio Gallone, and Massimo Comparini; Dr James Llinas; Dr Felix Govaers; and John Waterstone. The workshop closed with presentations by Dr Dan Hutt and Robert Been on CMRE research activities. A final discussion was led by Dr Sandro Carniel (Head of Research, CMRE) with Cdr Jorge Martinez (Spanish Navy, NATO Combined Joint Operations from the Sea Centre of Excellence); Cne Jehan-Christophe Charles (Ret. French Navy); Lt Cdr Ivo Musulin (HRV Navy, NATO Shipping Centre, MARCOM); and Guy Thomas, DCSA, MBA (Advisor for Maritime Situational Awareness, Multinational Maritime Security Centre of Excellence).
